Nine-year-old Mathilde has lived with her mother Hélène since her parents divorced. Their strained relationship, marked by Mathilde's failure at school, prompts the little girl to escape one night to join her grandfather Paul in a retirement home. With her is a letter proving that her grandmother Madeleine, who has been missing for thirty years, is still alive. Mathilde wants to convince Paul to help her find her. Together, they take a TGV to the southwest of France. The journey becomes one of truth, where secrets and unspoken words come to light. Buoyed by Mathilde's determination, she, Paul and Hélène finally learn to talk to each other and face the past together.
