synopsis

During Stalin's reign of terror, Eugenia Ginzburg, a literature professor, is convicted of anti-Soviet agitation and sentenced to 10 years' hard labor in a Siberian gulag. Having lost her husband, children and home, the young woman indulges in dark, morbid thoughts. However, while there, she meets camp doctor Dr. Anton Walter, who takes her under his wing and brings a glimmer of hope to the hell that is her daily life.
