In the summer of 1942, young Simon watched in horror as his father was arrested and deported by the Nazis. He manages to flee Belgium and reach England, where he joins his grandfather Abraham, an austere and distant figure. Simon finds no comfort in him. This erudite old man is attached to the values of Jewish tradition, and despises Simon's secular upbringing. Everything clashes between them, whether in their conception of religion or of life.
